Heanor Guide

Heanor is a small hill-top market town in the southern, rolling foot-hills of the Pennine range of mountains. Heanor lies between the cities of Derby and Nottingham in the region of England called the East-midlands.

Heanor is set on a hill rising out of the gentle valley formed by the Erewash River which feeds into the river Trent.

Heanor Market
Market Square

The centre of the town is a market square. Markets are held on the mornings of Monday, Friday and Saturday. The once thriving market has been in decline for many years. The market square is overlooked by a 12th century church at which there is a Community Fair on the first Saturday of the month. Heanor is administered by Amber Valley Borough Council and Heanor and Loscoe Town Council

The town had been involved in the coal mining industry for generations. (This region is where the industrial revolution began. The textile & pottery industries were also important to this area.) The mining & pottery industries collapsed in the 1980's and the textile industry collapsed in the 1990's which caused a blow to the local economy.

Despite this, the town has grown over the last 30 years and has now sprawled into the small communities of Langley Mill, Marpool, Codnor, Loscoe and Aldercar around the sides of Heanor Hill.
